Poster contest promotes peace
WAYNESBURG – Owen Farrier, a sixth-grader at Margaret Bell Miller Middle School, won the Waynesburg Lions Club’s Peace Poster contest and will now be judged in a statewide competition.
Owen and the other two top winners, Lily Rush and Emerson Wilson, advanced to the district level of competition judged Nov. 21.
The posters were evaluated by originality, artistic merit and expression of the “Share Peace” theme. Owen’s artwork was selected to go to the statewide competition and he will compete against 53 other posters that will be judged in May.
Sixteen Margaret Bell Miller Middle School students in art classes taught by Colby Love and Kristen Venturino participated in the competition this year. Eleanor Chapman from the Waynesburg Lions Club, along with assistant middle school Principal Justin Stephenson and Principal John Lipscomb judged the posters in the initial contest.
The posters were on display in the front window of First Federal Savings and Loan in Waynesburg.
The winning three posters are among the more than 375,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 28th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people.
One grand prize winner and 23 merit awards will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000 and a trip for the winner and two family members to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners each receive a certificate and cash award of $500.
