First day of school?

It’s the first day of school, and a father takes his little girl to a waiting teacher. That’s what this week’s Mystery Photo appears to be. The problem is, we have no idea who the people are, where the school was or when the photo was taken.

We’re hoping our readers can help us solve this puzzle.

The picture was probably taken in the late 1940s, based on the clothing. And although the school could be anywhere, it’s likely it was in the Washington area, as most of the photos in the Observer-Reporter’s archives from that time period are. Almost all of the neighborhood elementary schools are gone now. It is hoped that someone may recognize this one.

Clues are few. There are two American flags crossed in the window above the doors, which, oddly, have pneumatic hinges attached to the exterior. The grass appears not to have been cut all summer.

If you think you know who these people are, what school is shown or when the photo was taken, email Park Burroughs, retired executive editor, at pburroughs@observer-reporter.com, or call and leave a message for him along with your telephone number at 724-222-2200, extension 2400. With a little help from our readers, we may be able to solve this puzzle and publish our findings next Monday.
