Motorists won’t be able to drive on Cameron Road in South Strabane Township for about a month, while repairs to the road are completed.

South Strabane Township supervisors on Tuesday awarded a bid to Redstone Excavating for $219,155 to complete the road work.

The road will close to nonlocal traffic sometime in November, and John Rush of Widmer Engineering estimated the repair work will take about one month.

Motorists will not have access to Route 136 from Cameron Road, said supervisor John Keisling. Township manager John Stickle said a portion of the road near the top of Cameron Road, where it intersects with Route 136/East Beau Street, is sliding. The slide was caused by water that has seeped under the roadway, causing the road to deteriorate over time.

Heavy rains in May and June contributed to the deterioration.

The project calls for the construction of a wall to hold the roadway in place, and for repairs to the road so that it won’t slide any farther.

“It’s dangerous, and something needs to be done about it,” said Keisling.

The township road crew has applied asphalt to the road so that motorists and school buses can use the road until repairs begin.

Trinity East Elementary School is on Cameron Road.

Specific dates for the work have not been determined.
