WAYNESBURG – The Central Greene School District received an award Tuesday for its various meal programs to feed area children.

The Silver Apple award was given during the school board’s committee meeting by Janet Elder, a representative for the Pittsburgh community food bank.

She applauded the district for having the largest child feeding program in the area.

“We feel honored to work with a district so heavily involved in the welfare of their students,” Elder said.

Central Greene takes part in the summer feeding programs, the backpack programs and has recently added a dinner feeding program.

The free dinner program began last year and was a success for the district, Superintendent Brian Uplinger said.

The dinner runs from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and is offered to anyone in the community 18 and younger.

Uplinger said more than just students can take advantage of this free dinner program, and anyone from the county is more than able to come and get a meal.

He also said it helps students who participate in after-school activities such as sports, band or clubs with receiving a meal.

This is the first school program of its kind to be offered in Greene County.

“If a student isn’t fed, they are not going to be able to learn,” Uplinger said. “We are honored and humbled we were chosen for this award.”
