2000 Turkeys drive underway
Thanksgiving is less than six weeks away, and most of us will sit down with family to celebrate the holiday with a traditional dinner: turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberries and pumpkin pie.
But more than 4,700 families in Washington County who find themselves down on their luck this year will struggle to put a meal on the table.
That’s where 2000 Turkeys comes in.
The annual campaign, with a goal to provide a Thanksgiving dinner for every family who might not otherwise get one, is underway, and so far Washington County residents, businesses and organizations have donated nearly $6,000.
The generosity of residents who want to lend a hand – including Washington Lodge No. 164 F&AM, which donates $2,500 annually on the first day of the campaign – never fails to amaze the 2000 Turkeys board, the Greater Washington County Food Bank and the recipients.
But much work remains to be done in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.
2000 Turkeys aims to raise $100,000, and we gratefully accept every donation, from penny jars collected by school children to the sizable checks given generously by local businesses and organizations.
Every $15 provides dinner for a family of four.

Every penny from the 2000 Turkeys campaign goes toward making sure we have enough turkey and fixings for those families in need.
