Where’s this old-fashioned fashion department?

The fashion department of this store was all ready for spring, displaying the latest in women’s clothing in aisles decorated with Easter baskets.

This photo from the Observer-Reporter archives was taken by Washington commercial photographer Dan Harbaugh, whose work spanned the first half of the 20th century. But that’s about all we know about the picture. Where it was made, when and why are a mystery.

Judging from the prices, the photo is pretty old. What appear to be socks in the hosiery section cost 39 cents, and all purses were just 97 cents.

Some of our readers may be able to recall the distinctive wooden cases and functional lighting, and we hope they might offer their remembrances of whatever store this might have been.

If you think you recognize the store or know why the photo was taken, email Park Burroughs, retired executive editor, at pburroughs@observer-reporter.com, or call and leave a message for him along with your telephone number at 724-222-2200, extension 2400.

With a little help from our friends, we may be able to identify and take readers back to this location in next Monday’s Observer-Reporter.
