Within a couple of weeks, a Jefferson-Morgan fourth-grader raised enough money to provide 2,650 meals for children.

Brianna Barr of Jefferson along with her mother, Taura, held an online bake sale through American Girl for Goodness Bake agreement with the No Kid Hungry campaign.

Brianna saw an advertisement in one of her beloved American Girl magazines to go along with the newest doll they introduced, which was a baker.

“I thought it would be a good experience to try and show her that she is very privileged and not every girl is,” Taura said. “We had no idea we would get the response we did.”

They created their own online account called Brianna’s Sweets and Treats on the No Kid Hungry website where people could place orders or make donations.

So many orders led to two nonstop days of baking.

“We actually made a new recipe called the hot chocolate cookie and that was my favorite,” Brianna said.

Within the two days, Taura estimates they made at least five banana breads, dozens of cupcakes and at least 10 dozen cookies.

From Sept. 2 to the first week of October, Brianna raised a total of $265 for No Kid Hungry and even donated some of her own money.

“I just wanted to raise money for kids who don’t have enough money to get stuff like I am,” Brianna said.

The campaign estimates every $10 donated is able to provide a child with 100 meals.

She and her mother plan to do the online bake sale again in an effort to raise more money for the campaign.
