Grandmother cited for child endangerment
A Slovan woman faces charges including endangering the welfare of children after her 5-year-old grandson ran across busy Route 18 in Smith Township barefoot earlier this month and entered a bar.
Lisa Ann Maczko, 49, of 1919 Smith Township Road (Route 18), is also charged by Smith police with disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia in connection with the Oct. 10 incident.
A woman told Smith police that about 5:20 p.m. she and a group of friends were drinking at Richey’s Bar and Grill, 1930 Smith Township Road when a boy entered the bar alone.
He approached a woman and told her, “Mommy, come home.” The boy then left and ran out into traffic.
Police learned from her that the boy lived about a block down the road and gave the officer the name of the boy’s mother. The officer went to the residence. A boy answered the door. The boy told the officer that his grandmother was home and then heard her say, “Come on in.”
Maczko was sitting on the couch. A marijuana pipe was on the floor and a half-empty bottle of vodka was on a table. Maczko’s speech was slurred, according to police, when she told the officer the boy’s mother was over at the bar drinking.
Maczko told the officer she did not drink.
When the officer asked Maczko how the boy got to the bar, she reportedly told police that she sent him over there to try and get his mother to come home.
The officer asked her if she made the boy walk across Route 18, and she responded that she did, police stated in court documents.
The officer asked the boy if he felt safe in the house the 5-year-old told him that he did not. As they were leaving the house, the officer asked the boy if he had any shoes and the 5-year-old said he did not.
The boy was taken into protective custody and Washington County Children and Youth Services was contacted.
Charges were sent by summons from the office of District Judge Gary Havelka. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing before Havelka on Nov. 19.
