Greene County 4-H is offering a new program for area children that focuses on building and programming robots.

The robotics club is for children 10 years and older who are interested in learning how to make a functioning robot.

Greene County 4-H educator Chris Becker, said the subject of robotics is a fairly new concept in Pennsylvania.

“There has recently been a great interest in career readiness in young people,” Becker said. “Mostly focusing on STEM education of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

The club will focus on teaching children engineering skills during the process of actually building a robot. Math and computer programming skills will be used when making the robot move.

The club will begin in November with Jason Hursey as leader. They will meet twice monthly from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the extensions office in Greene County.

There is a $20 membership cost to join the club.

Regional, state and national robotics competitions are available through the 4-H program and also from colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Interested families must register their child prior to their first club meeting. During registration, they will receive more information about meeting dates and proof of membership.

Becker said if any adults are interested or have an education in computer programming, engineering or robotics and would like to help lead the club, to also call. At this point, the club has only one leader, which limits the amount of children who can join.

Interested families or adults are asked to call 724-627-3745 or email cxy2@psu.edu.
