Second man arrested in Midway convenience store burglary
A second man was arrested in connection with the burglary of a Midway convenience store in August.
McDonald police Tuesday arrested Joshua Oravetz, 24, of 214 Brook St., McDonald. His arrest comes less than 48 hours after Mason T. Kusky, 19, of Strabane, was charged in connection with the Aug. 8 burglary of the Midway Mini-Mart, 1010 St. John St.
Police said Oravetz was implicated in the crime by Kusky, whose fingerprints were found at the scene. Prints were lifted from a wooden surface near the register by a trooper from the state police forensics services unit and sent to the state police crime laboratory. Results of prints from a left index finger and left ring finger were reportedly linked to Kusky.
Kusky reportedly agreed to talk with police about the incident after he was arrested by police Sunday night. Kusky allegedly told police the two were in an apartment in Midway using alcohol and Xanax when they ran out of cigarettes, and decided to break into the store.
Police said Kusky told them Oravetz came up with the idea to rob an innocent bystander who was leaving a local bar so they could get cigarettes, but Kusky said he didn’t like that idea because he once was a robbery victim. Then, Kusky said, Oravetz suggested burglarizing the mini-mart.
According to police, Kusky told them it was Oravetz who found a concrete block at the rear of the store and threw it through the door. Kusky told police Oravetz stole two bottles of Mountain Dew and cigarettes.
Oravetz was arraigned before District Judge Ethan Ward on charges of burglary, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, theft, receiving stolen property and possessing instruments of crime and placed in Washington County jail on $50,000 bond.
