Labor Day will once again usher in “The week the world stops,” or, as it is more commonly known, the West Alexander Fair.

In its 109th year, the agricultural event celebrates small-town, rural America with traditions like a parade, fireworks and livestock competitions.

“Most people around here take vacation from work that week and enjoy their time together,” said Barbara Reed, secretary of the fair board, who said the slogan represents an atmosphere of days gone by.

The fair runs every day from Monday through Sept. 12 at the Route 40 fairgrounds in West Alexander. More than 40 acres come alive with rides, games, exhibits, musical acts, food, vendors and crafters.

Monday’s opening festivities include the 12:30 p.m. parade, rodeos at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and a 6 p.m. queen crowning.

A demolition derby will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and quads and motocross racing will take place 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Fireworks will follow the 7 p.m. truck pull Friday.

As a September event, the fair offers one last hurrah for kids heading back to school.

“We’re the last (fair) in the tri-county area,” Reed said.

About 17,000 guests are expected to take advantage of the end-of-season celebration.

Taking place while school is in session allows local students to spend a day engaged in hands-on learning.

As they have for many years, McGuffey School District second-grade students will attend “Got Ag Day” Friday, complete with a local history lessons and animal-care tips.

Saturday’s market animal sale will feature “a lot of good, quality animals,” said Reed, including swine, lambs and steers.

“We just hope there’s a little something for everybody,” Reed said.
