Man, dog rescued from building fire

A man and his dog were rescued from a balcony at a third-floor apartment Tuesday during a fire in downtown Charleroi.
Charleroi fire Chief Bob Whiten said he didn’t believe anyone was injured in the 8 p.m. fire at 731 McKean Ave.
Whiten said a state police fire marshal was summoned to the scene to investigate the cause of the blaze in the former MD Bar, which is now home to Thorpe’s Reconditioned Appliance & Repair shop. Whiten said the fire appeared to have started in the rear second floor of the three-story brick building in Charleroi’s historic district.
The fire was under control within a half hour after firefighters arrived.
“It was tough,” Whiten said. He said multiple fire departments were summoned to the fire because of the high nighttime temperatures that could have put firefighters at risk of health problems.
