The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library in Waynesburg concluded its summer reading programming last month and about 85 local children spent time reading or listening to books during the “Every Hero Has A Story” summer program.

The top five readers this summer logged a combined 5,403 minutes on their reading logs with each top reader receiving a set of pencils, a notebook for school, and a special certificate signifying their individual accomplishment.

The top five readers this summer were Jenna Martin, logging 2,549 minutes; Lauren Martin, 2,180 minutes; Paige Redman, 1,763 minutes; Darren Knight, 1,335 minutes; and Matthew Wassil, 900 minutes.

This summer’s reading program also encouraged young readers to become “Pint-sized Heroes” in their local community. Each week, the library invited a a local nonprofit organization to speak to the children on how they could individually donate a needed item.

The organizations represented this year include: Ronald McDonald House Charities, Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Toys for Tots, Corner Cupboard Food Bank and the Bowlby Library/Teen Advisory Group. Numerous donations were collected each week for the organizations.
