Washington County inmate suing nurses

A Washington County jail inmate filed a federal lawsuit claiming two jail nurses violated his civil rights after they failed to provide proper medical attention.
James Matthew Large Jr., 22, of Monongahela, filed the suit in federal court in July against Cheryl McGravitts and a nurse identified only as “Jill.”
Large alleges the women ignored his requests to be housed in the jail’s medical clinic. Instead, he said he was placed “in a dangerous environment,” where he sustained additional injuries, according to court documents.
Large suffered a vertebrae fracture May 12 in a motor vehicle accident near Ringgold High School in Carroll Township. Officers found a loaded revolver in the vehicle after the crash, and Large, who was a passenger, told officers it was his. He is not permitted to possess a firearm after a previous conviction. He faces charges of possession of firearm prohibited and proof of license. Large was taken to a hospital for treatment and then placed in the county jail for violating his parole.
Large said he made medical staff at the jail aware of his injuries, but instead of being housed in the jail’s clinic, he was placed in the special housing unit for medical observation.
In June, Large was moved to an “isolated section of the housing unit,” court documents said. He complained about thin mattresses and that guards did not frequently check the unit, court documents said.
On June 20, Large alleges that while attempting to get off his bunk, he rolled onto the bed frame, which made contact with his back injury. Large then fell from the bunk, hit his head and was knocked unconscious.
When he regained consciousness, Large alleges that he called for a correctional officer and waited 30 to 40 minutes before anyone responded.
Large suffered a concussion.
Special counsel Robert Grimm, who represents the county on insurance matters, did not return calls seeking comment.
Large, who is representing himself, is seeking an unspecified amount in damages. He remains in the county jail on a $100,000 bond, and is currently undergoing a mental health evaluation.
