Touch-A Truck to be held Saturday

WAYNESBURG – Children who love trucks and other rough and tough motor vehicles will not want to miss the fifth annual Touch-A-Truck event Saturday at First Baptist Church of Waynesburg.
The event, sponsored by the church, gives children an opportunity to see and touch big trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, tractors, cranes, tractor trailers and more, on display in the church parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Children will be able learn how these vehicles operate and meet the people who work them and possibly be inspired about a future career, said Dawn Mankey, the event coordinator.
“I think any time children are allowed to climb into a vehicle they normally are not allowed to touch, it’s a big deal,” Mankey said, explaining the event’s appeal.
Attendants will on-hand at all vehicles. This event is free and all children 12 and younger will receive T-shirts, while supplies last, and chances to win Chinese auction and scavenger hunt prizes. Grand prizes will include a Steelers-themed, Ford Power Wheels ride-on toy for children 5 and younger and a Fliker scooter for children 6 to 12.
The event will also feature food, music, a photo booth, face painting, pinatas and other games. Last year, the event had more than 500 registered children 12 and under.
“It has become a wonderful children’s event,” Mankey said.
The church started Touch-A-Truck in 2011 to provide an activity for children in the community.
“We thought it would be nice to create an event for children who can’t go on vacation, to Kennywood or the beach, to have someplace to go to and have some fun,” she said
Mankey organizes the event but she said most of the congregation of the church helps out to make it work.
The event also couldn’t be held without its many sponsors.
Some of the major sponsors include Hartman & Hartman Construction, Fox Ford, Maxim Crane, 18 Karat, Apex, Washington Financial Bank and Washington Financial Bank Wealth Division and First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Greene County.
