Students at Canon-McMillan Senior High School will be greeted by an increased police presence as they enter the building Friday morning after North Strabane Township police were notified Thursday by district administration about alleged threats made by a student that were violent in nature and involved a firearm.

“We know who it is and are confident he is the only person involved,” township police Chief Brian Hughes said Thursday night. “We are making sure that if he has any capabilities of carrying out the threat, it will be eliminated.”

“At this point, we are still investigating and are not sure if the threat was even credible,” the chief added. “This is still fresh. We are in the process of talking with the student and his parents.”

Hughes contacted Canonsburg police Chief Al Coghill and Cecil Township police Chief Shawn Bukovinsky who agreed to send officers to the high school for the start of classes. Hughes said there should be about eight additional officers at the high school. He also talked with the principal and assistant principal at the school.

“We are all in agreement that is a good idea to have a strong police presence,” he added. “We are being proactive to any threat involving a firearm. But I feel confident it will be completely safe for parents to send their children to school Friday.”

Hughes said his department is not taking any risks with these sort of threats.

“We want everyone to feel safe,” the chief said. “The parents have every right to be concerned. If I had a child, I would be concerned, too.”

Hughes posted a notice Thursday night on the department’s Facebook page about the alleged threat after his department was inundated with calls from parents.
