Peters adds police force part-timers

1 min read

McMURRAY – Peters Township Police Department is planning to add four part-time officers to its 28-person force as soon as possible.

Chief Harry Fruecht said the additions are necessary because of upcoming retirements and plans to move one part-time officer, Frank Marko, to full-time in November.

Both Capt. Michael Yanchak, who has been with the department since 1982, and Sgt. Mike Carso, a 39-year veteran of the department, are planning on retiring early next year. Also, Fruecht has indicated he would like to retire next year.

Fruecht said he is looking at 19 candidates, both male and female, for the four positions. The candidates recently underwent physical agility and written testing at the Allegheny County Police Academy in Allison Park.

“There are some good candidates,” he said.

There is no specific date for the hiring of the new part-time officers, said Fruecht, adding that the candidates will have to undergo background checks before any final decisions are made.

The township recently hired Doug Grimes, a 28-year veteran of the state police, as its new deputy chief. Grimes started his new position Aug. 31.
