Fire causes partial collapse of Mt. Pleasant Township home
The state police fire marshal was called to the scene of a house fire early Saturday in Mt. Pleasant Township.
The fire started around 3 a.m. at 167 Fort Cherry Road. Mt. Pleasant Township Deputy Fire Chief Jay Turner said the call initially came in as a porch fire, but it quickly spread to the rest of the home. Flames engulfed the home, which was made of cedar, and a portion of the structure collapsed, Turner said.
The cause is unknown and the fire remains under investigation.
Turner said the residents were able to get out of the home safely and are staying with family.
John Baker, who lives two houses down, said the residents are family and only identified them as Elaine and John. Baker said his son’s barking dog alerted them to the flames. Other family members called the flames intense and were happy their loved ones survived.
McDonald, Midway, Cecil Township and Slovan fire departments assisted.
