Museum expands educational program with $5M sponsorship
WASHINGTON -The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum says it has received a $5 million sponsorship to expand a program that gives demonstrations in museum galleries.
The museum said in a news release Tuesday the sponsorship from GE Aviation will allow its Explainers program to expand in its building in Washington and its Chantilly, Virginia, location.
Explainers are high school and college students who perform educational demonstrations in galleries and assist with events. Explainers work part time to interpret exhibitions and staff educational stations, focusing on the science of flight, the study of planets and the universe, and STEM concepts.
The museum said the sponsorship will also help the program offer online video conferencing to schools. Initially, the online conferences will be offered in some public schools in Cincinnati.
