County Special Olympics offering basketball

Special Olympics of Greene County is adding basketball to its list of sports offered to people with special needs.
Currently, the organization offers bocce ball training for local people with intellectual disabilities.
They plan to begin competing in basketball against other Western Pennsylvania teams.
Brianna Watt, co-manager of the revitalized Special Olympics of Greene County, said they want to offer as many sports as possible in the future.
The first to be added will be basketball.
One of the more popular sports in Special Olympics, Watt hopes the addition of basketball will bring more people to the team. The group currently has 17 athletes.
“By offering different sports like basketball and maybe volleyball someday, we hope to get more people participating who have an interest in those sports specifically,” Watt said.
Practices will begin in October with games expected to start some time during the winter.
The original Greene County Special Olympics dissolved four years ago after board members disbanded the group. Watt, along with others, have been working this year to revitalize the Olympics in the area.
