Adams retires as city treasurer
Washington Treasurer Dennis L. Adams retired, citing health and personal reasons.
“I love the city and the job, it’s just time for me to move on for my health and my family,” Adams, 68, said Thursday.
Mayor Scott Putnam said Adams submitted a letter last week, formally informing council his retirement is effective April 30. In order to fill the position for the remainder of Adams’ term, Putnam and council will make an appointment.
The appointed treasurer will have the job until January 2018, with the opportunity to run in the 2017 election.
“We talked. We have some people in mind,” Putnam said. “Probably in the May meeting, we’ll make an appointment.”
The treasurer is responsible for all tax collection in the city. An assistant treasurer – Susan Bonus – is in the office every day with three additional support staff members.
The treasurer’s annual salary is $11,000.
Adams ran unopposed in last year’s election, securing his third term in office. In addition to his terms as city treasurer, Adams spent eight years on Washington School Board and four years as city controller.
