PITTSBURGH (AP) – An American deported from Uganda and charged in a massive counterfeiting scheme wants a federal judge in Pittsburgh to release him from jail until he can stand trial.

Ryan Gustafson wants to be released to the custody of a non-denominational Christian missionary group in eastern Pennsylvania, which would prevent him from using drugs or alcohol and require church attendance.

A hearing on Gustafson’s request was scheduled for Friday.

Prosecutors contend Gustafson is a threat to flee to Uganda because his son and wife live there, and she’s the granddaughter of late dictator Idi Amin.

Gustafson is charged with printing at least $1.4 million in fake U.S. currency in Uganda over the past several years. Prosecutors say $400,000 worth were sold and shipped to the Pittsburgh-area and other U.S. destinations.
