A tractor-trailer carrying coal overturned at the Route 19/21 split in Franklin Township about 8 a.m. Wednesday, causing minor traffic delays in the area for more than an hour.

The rig overturned onto its passenger side when the driver attempted to turn left from East High Street onto Roy E. Furman Highway, spilling its load onto the roadway and a grassy area in front of First Federal Savings and Loan.

A large tow truck pulled the rig back onto its wheels as workers from the state Department of Transportation redirected traffic around the intersections. Traffic coming from Route 19 was detoured into the bank’s parking lot and back onto Route 21.

Crews used construction equipment to scoop material spilled onto the roadway and shovel it back into the truck’s trailer.

State police, who are investigating the crash, did not identify the driver or say if anyone was injured in the crash. Investigators also did not say if the driver would be cited for the crash.
