Silas Carlisle, a son of Ken and Caitlin Carlisle of Rogersville, waves to runners during last year’s Corner Cupboard 5K run/walk.

WAYNESBURG – Greene County will run to raise awareness about hunger during the 2nd annual Race to End Hunger Sept. 17.

Registration for the 5K run/walk by Corner Cupboard Food Bank will start at 7:30 a.m. and the race will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 2.5K Family Fun Fitness Walk at 8:35 a.m. at the Waynesburg Armory located in EverGreene Technology Park.

“It’s a chance to get people together and active for a good cause,” food bank executive director Candace Tustin said.

The race was established last year to spread awareness about hunger and hard times that community members are facing, Tustin said.

“I think it was maybe an idea just to raise awareness of what our mission is and to give people an opportunity to actively fight for the cause,” she said. “I feel that there’s always a great need. It’s not feeding starving people, but just assisting people who are really falling on hard times.”

Tustin said the bank feeds about 2,000 individuals a month, many of whom are seniors.

“A lot of times, it’s that decision, ‘Do I buy groceries or do I pay for my medication?'” she said. “The unemployment rate has been rising in Greene County so we seem to be getting an uprise in people who need assistance.”

People who pre-register for the race will get a T-shirt. The cost is $18 and the deadline is Sept. 3. Registration on race day costs $20.

Tustin said the food bank will use the money they bring in to pay for the venue, capital projects and various equipment repairs.

She’s still looking for people to sponsor the race and she hopes to bring in some sporting vendors and health and wellness vendors who could set up booths on race day.

Tustin said she’s hoping to increase the attendance from last year’s approximate 30 racers.

“We are hoping to accomplish more folks getting involved in the community and taking notice,” she said.
