Concrete fall leads to garage closure
Those driving to California University of Pennsylvania will have to find parking somewhere other than the multilevel Vulcan Garage on the campus loop road after a chunk of concrete dropped from a first-level ceiling Friday.
The college closed the garage, located behind the Manderino Library, until engineers inspect it.
“We have no greater concern than the safety of our students, employees and visitors,” said Cal U. spokeswoman Christine Kindl on Tuesday.
The concrete shattered on impact and did not strike any people or vehicles.
“It was swept aside,” Kindl said.
The closure means the loss of 660 spaces, and visitors are being directed to park in metered lots 11 and 17.
Move-in days at California University of Pennsylvania campus residence halls took place Friday through Sunday before the start of fall semester classes Monday. The university’s intercollegiate teams are called the Vulcans.
Cal U. last year had an enrollment of 7,854.
