Flood leaves more than 50 families homeless in Pennsylvania
CONNELLSVILLE (AP) — More than 50 families are homeless in and around a Western Pennsylvania city hit by flash floods and its schools won’t open until next week.
Cleanup efforts continued Tuesday in Connellsville, a city of roughly 7,500 about 35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
The floods hit when five inches of rain fell in about two hours Sunday night.
The city declared a state of emergency, and has been working with Fayette County emergency officials and those from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.
Officials announced Tuesday that restoring homes, roads, bridges and utilities will cost several million dollars.
The district’s schools were supposed to open Monday, the 29th, but that’s been pushed back to Sept. 6.
More than 30 families have been displaced in Connellsville, with the rest in neighboring Bullskin Township.
