2000 Turkeys campaign considered huge success
Thank you, Washington County.
2000 Turkeys reached – and far surpassed – its goal to raise $100,000 to provide Thanksgiving dinners to low-income, food-insecure residents in Washington County.
In all, Washington County individuals, organizations and businesses donated $138,786.64.
“The efforts of the 2000 Turkeys campaign resulted in hot, nutritious meals for more than 6,000 (Washington County families) in November,” said Connie Burd, director of the Greater Washington County Food Bank.
“Without the generosity of so many, and supplemental funds from 2,000 Turkeys, this abundance of foods would not be possible. Without your help, someone just might go to bed hungry,” she said, noting that 778 new families came to the food bank last month.
The food bank relies primarily on community support.
For more than 30 years, 2000 Turkeys, sponsored by WJPA Radio and the Observer-Reporter, and supported by hundreds and hundreds of individuals and groups who generously donate each year, has worked to make sure that every family in Washington County – including children and senior citizens, who comprise more than half of the food bank recipients – can sit down together on Thanksgiving Day to enjoy a holiday meal.
The 2000 Turkeys board, the Food Bank and all of the recipients thank you for your generosity and your willingess to lend your less fortunate neighbors a helping hand.
We also thank Charlotte Allen of the Observer-Reporter, who has served as treasurer of the 2000 Turkeys board and is retiring from both the company and her board position, for her dedication and service to the community.
We wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season.
