Interstate 90 westbound still closed by Pennsylvania crash
ERIE (AP) – The state Department of Transportation says a section of westbound Interstate 90 in northwestern Pennsylvania will probably remain closed through noon as crews clear wreckage from a 15-vehicle pileup being blamed on lake-effect now.
State police say the crash closed down the interstate in Erie County early Thursday afternoon. That’s when at least 15 people were hurt in chain reaction crashes near Girard, about 20 miles southwest of Erie.
The eastbound lanes reopened about midnight, but PennDOT Region 1 spokesman Jim Carroll says the westbound lanes probably won’t reopen until midday.
Most of the injuries were described as moderate. Police say the crash involved at least five tractor-trailers and multiple passenger vehicles.
The westbound lanes are closed between Exit 9 in Girard and Exit 16 in Fairview.
