Fire destroys Morgan Twp. home of J-M teacher, AD
A fast-moving fire Thursday morning destroyed the Greene County home of a Jefferson-Morgan elementary teacher and the school district’s athletic director.
Fire crews battled extreme cold and a frigid wind chill while fighting the fire that destroyed the Morgan Township home at 395 Kennel Road owned by Scot and Lisa Moore.
Jefferson fire chief Duane Walters said they were called to the blaze shortly after 10 a.m. and found the log cabin home engulfed in flames. No one was inside at the time, Walters said, but it was not immediately known if any family pets were killed in the fire.
Walters said the frigid temperatures made conditions fighting the fire more difficult for crews at the scene, which was located on a long driveway in a wooded area just off Jefferson Road. The departments had to run 20 hose extensions to reach the nearest fire hydrant, which was about a quarter mile from the house.
“Nobody got hurt. That’s the main thing,” Walters said. “I know it was cold and everything, but we never really had an issue with the water. But the bone-chilling wind, and it was right on top of a ridge.”
Jefferson-Morgan school officials are now offering help to the family. Scot Moore is the school district’s athletic director while Lisa Moore is a fifth-grade teacher, according to the district.
Superintendent Donna Furnier said that if anyone in the community wants to “make a contribution” to the Moore family, they can do so by contacting the school district 724-883-2310.
“Everyone is still in shock,” Furnier said Thursday afternoon. “There’s been an outpouring of support. These are very kind, caring people and the entire community wants to support them.”
The state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze, Walters said. Firefighters from Waynesburg-Franklin assisted Jefferson at the scene.
