Several area roads affected by wintry mix
A mix of heavy rain and melting snow caused flooding in several areas in Washington and Greene counties Sunday.
About one-and-a-half to two inches of precipitation – mostly rain with some light sleet and snow – fell from 7 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday.
“A lot of it had to do with heavy rainfall overnight and snow melt from the previous day,” said meteorologist Rihaan Gangat of the National Weather Service.
Rising water from Pigeon Creek and Ten Mile Creek caused road flooding.
In Washington County, flooding was reported near Charleroi at the intersection of Bentleyville and Redds Mill roads; in Finleyville at Airport Road and Route 88; and in Amity on Plum Sock Road.
The Monongahela Fire Department posted on their Facebook page at 5 p.m. that Park Avenue, from West Main Street to Chess Street Ext. will be closed until further notice because of a rock slide across from Kiblers Automotive.
In Greene County, the weather service received reports of flooding one mile southwest of Rogersvillle on Roy Furman Highway and a mile west of Bristoria, on Bristoria Road.
Gangat said no accumulation is expected through Monday.
Crews worked to clean up several roads that were either flooded or littered with resulting debris or mudslides, said state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Valerie Peterson.
As temperatures were expected to fall into this morning, crews were scheduled to treat any potential freezing.
Peterson advised drivers to outfit automobiles with snow tires with adequate tread and to ensure windshield wipers and headlights are working properly before traveling. She said drivers should decrease speeds and increase distance with the vehicle ahead to avoid collisions.
