PITTSBURGH (AP) – Health officials have inspected the kitchen of the Allegheny County jail after more than two dozen inmates suffered nausea and vomiting.

An inspector with the county health department found several violations, including kitchen knives in a soiled area, old food debris in a slicer, water leaks and warn food trays that aren’t easy to clean.

Allegheny County Health Department Director Karen Hacker tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette it’s not clear whether the rash of health complaints has anything to do with the kitchen violations. The department is planning to test inmate stool samples to pin down a cause.

The health department began investigating after being alerted by the relative of an inmate.
