Man sentenced for assaulting girl
WAYNESBURG – A Waynesburg man already listed as a Megan’s Law sexual offender was sentenced Monday for assaulting a teenage girl at his borough apartment last June.
Wayne Calvin Shriver, 23, who pleaded no contest Nov. 2 to misdemeanor charges of corruption of a minor and indecent assault without consent, was sentenced by Greene County President Judge Farley Toothman to eight months to five years in the county jail.
He also pleaded no contest to harassment and was fined $300. Prosecutors withdrew felony charges of false imprisonment and unlawful contact with a minor in exchange for the no contest plea.
Waynesburg police said the 16-year-old girl stopped by Shriver’s apartment at 32 W. Elm St. on June 1 to use a charger to power her cellphone.
Police said she was in the living room when Shriver tried to kiss her, and then forced her on the couch. Police said Shriver held the girl by the throat with one hand and reached down her pants, but stopped when he heard his girlfriend coming out of the bathroom.
The girl then left the apartment and reported the incident to police the following night.
At the time of the assault, Shriver was listed as a Tier I sexual offender on the state police Megan’s Law website for a May 2011 offense in West Virginia. He was convicted in that state in April 2012 of third-degree sexual assault involving a minor, according to the site.
Authorities in West Virginia requested he be returned there after the no contest plea and Shriver waived extradition Monday. It was not known when Shriver, who has been held at Greene County jail on $50,000 bond since his June 4 arrest, will be returned to Marion County, W.Va., for the probation violation.
A hearing to determine whether Shriver is a sexually violent predator has not yet been scheduled.
Toothman ordered Shriver not to have any contact with the victim or anyone else under the age of 18. He also must remain away from schools or colleges.
