A Canonsburg man was in state police custody and accused of burglarizing a Canton Township home shortly after the crime took place Thursday.

The Canton code enforcer and workers at a glass company helped to lead police to the suspect, Nathanyal D. Patterson, who was taken into custody about 12:15 p.m. in the 1900 block of West Chestnut Street, court records show.

Police were summoned to the area by Canton code enforcer Chris Hammett after Hammett received a complaint from workers at A&M Glass about a suspicious man walking behind a house on Old Street, police stated in the affidavit.

Police went to the house and were told by the victim’s son that his mother’s house had been broken into. Police said a muddy shoeprint on the back door matched the shoes Patterson, 26, of 634 Euclid Ave., was wearing when he was apprehended.

Patterson was accused of stealing a laptop and jewelry valued at $2,385 from the residence. All of the items were recovered from near where police found Patterson, court records indicate.

He was charged with resisting arrest, theft, trespassing and burglary and sent to Washington County jail on $10,000 bond set by District Judge Mark Wilson.
