Elderly driver dies after going wrong way on Pittsburgh road
APITTSBURGH (AP) — Authorities in western Pennsylvania say an elderly man died in a head-on collision after driving down the wrong side of a Pittsburgh road.
Officials said 81-year-old Perry Kastanias of Millvale crossed the 40th Street Bridge shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday and turned left into the outbound lane of Route 28 against the flow of traffic.
Police said his vehicle struck one vehicle and then collided with a second, leaving both drivers trapped in their vehicles.
The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said Kastnias was pronounced dead shortly after 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Allegheny General Hospital.
Public safety department spokeswoman Sonya Toler said the driver of the other car was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where a condition report wasn’t immediately available.
