Residents in the area of the 500 block of East Maiden Street in Washington called 911 early Monday morning after hearing numerous gunshots being fired in their neighborhood.

Washington police were dispatched to that area, as well as the area of Elm and Houston streets, after dispatchers received multiple calls about the gunshots about 1 a.m. Callers reported hearing about six shots being fired in the 500 block of East Maiden. While police were on their way to the scene, dispatchers advised the officers they had received calls about shots fired in the second location.

Residents told police they saw a silver Chevrolet Cruze and what appeared to be a white, newer model sport utility vehicle on Elm. Police found what appeared to be shell casings from a 40-caliber weapon in the driveway of a home in the 500 block of East Maiden.

Police checked the area for the vehicles and any possible victims but found neither.

Washington police Chief Robert Wilson said Monday afternoon police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
