Nestled between the recently dismantled Pettit building and the newly opened Presidents Pub is 1941 Boutique, an upscale thrift store at 92 N. Main St., Washington, operated by the City Mission.

“It’s a new concept,” said Dr. Sally Mounts, development director of the nonprofit. “There are thrifters out there who like to peruse more high-end items.”

Named for the year the City Mission was established, 1941 Boutique offers upscale clothing, accessories, jewelry and home decor. Like the mission’s Hidden Treasures thrift stores in Washington, Canonsburg, Rostraver and Monongahela, profits support programs for the homeless.

Items are either gently used or brand new.

“It’s been spectacular,” store manager Cindi Jones said.

Jones, who previously managed the Monongahela store, said many clients followed her from the Mon Valley for the personalized service she offers. If a customer is looking for a certain item, she works with the mission’s central distribution location to get it for them.

“People are familiar with me and know I’ll go the extra mile,” she said.

Opened Nov. 11, a sign hung outside just last week helped increase foot traffic in the pleasant-smelling store.

Employees give customers a 10-percent-off coupon toward their next purchase to entice repeat clientele.

Open from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, the boutique also carries items for children and babies, seasonal decor, wall hangings and homewares. Cash, credit and debit cards are accepted.

In its 75th year of serving the homeless, the City Mission provides shelter, nourishment and rehabilitation to those in need.

“If (1941 Boutique) works, we hope to establish more in the region,” Mounts said. “Shoppers also get the benefit of knowing they’re helping a deserving charity.”
