Father of Hanlan siblings accused of aiding fugitive

The father of a fugitive, who had eluded authorities for nearly a year, was arrested Friday morning and charged with lying to police while helping to hide his son.
Hodge Hanlan, 70, faces two felony counts of hindering apprehension after state police said he helped his son, Shane Hanlan, avoid being taken into custody after his Feb. 19 conviction for receiving stolen property and carrying a firearm without a license.
Shane Hanlan did not appear for his sentencing in May and his bail was revoked. He had been missing since that time.
Police said they interviewed Hodge Hanlan multiple times since then, including Wednesday night, and each time he told investigators he had not seen his son and did not know where he was.
A witness told investigators he saw Hodge Hanlan with Shane at the Dilliner convenience store earlier that night. However, the father told investigators he was at the store with a man name “Shane Hoffman,” court records indicate.
Authorities raided the Hanlan’s family home at 859 Bald Hill Church Road about 6 a.m. Thursday and found Hodge sleeping on a couch just a few feet away from where Shane was also resting.
U.S. marshals took Shane into custody after he tried to run.
Hodge Hanlan was arraigned Friday morning and taken to the Greene County jail on $15,000 bond while he awaits his preliminary hearing at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday before District Judge Lee Watson.
Meanwhile, Shane Hanlan, 29, who already was charged with escape and resisting arrest, now faces new charges. State police charged him with hindering apprehension, escape and flight to avoid punishment for his role in allegedly aiding his brother, Waylon Hanlan, following Waylon’s escape from the Greene County jail Dec. 27.
Shane, Waylon and their other brother, Clinton, were spotted riding in a car in Dunkard Township two days after the escape.
Police arrested Waylon near the car and Clinton in West Virginia, but Shane remained on the run for more than a week until the raid by U.S. marshals.
Shane had been on the Greene County sheriff’s most wanted list since May when his bond was revoked for failing to show for a hearing.
Police said Shane, Clinton and their sister, Vanessa, helped Waylon elude capture following his escape from Greene County jail. The other siblings are also facing charges in connection with the case. Vanessa and Waylon are being held at the Washington County jail while Shane and Clinton are lodged in Greene County.
