CANTON, Ohio (AP) – Authorities say a police dog shot during a burglary investigation in northeastern Ohio has died, and the suspect was shot when officers returned fire.

Canton police say the K9 named Jethro died Sunday. He was shot in the face, shoulder and neck area Saturday as police investigated an alarm at a grocery store.

Police say officers confronted a burglary suspect who opened fire before being shot himself. The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the leg.

About 80 people gathered outside the police station Sunday for a vigil for the dog described as a hero by the mayor and a police chaplain.

Jethro received a police escort to be cremated Sunday. The police chief says he doesn’t doubt the dog saved officers’ lives.
