CALIFORNIA – California University of Pennsylvania is undertaking another round of furloughs as the school’s “needs and resources change,” a Cal U. spokeswoman said Monday.

The seven nonfaculty employees whose jobs were cut were approached individually about their positions, Cal U. spokeswoman Christine Kindl said. The cuts come two years after the university eliminated 30 positions.

“These decisions are always difficult to make, and we understand their impact on people’s lives,” Kindl said.

Cal U. students formed a protest group on Facebook to rally around the assistant director of the school’s Women’s Center, who is set to lose her job in April. The group supporting Kay Kutz indicates it’s gathering statements from students whose lives have been positively affected by her to send to decision-makers at Cal U.

“Let’s use the voices Kay taught us to use to keep advocating for her in the same way she advocated for us,” the group’s administrator, Meghan Ycheck, posted on the page Sunday.

Kutz and Ycheck did not respond to messages Monday.

Kindl said the positions were not eliminated because of performance issues and the Women’s Center will continue to serve students.

“The director is very experienced and fully trained to serve as a victim advocate; she will be able to work with any student who needs those services,” Kindl said.

Cal U. furloughed 16 nonunion employees and eliminated 14 others through attrition in 2014 because of a then-shrinking enrollment. It was not immediately known Monday what other positions were involved in this round of furloughs.
