Canonsburg-Houston-Southpointe Rotary Club is providing free child identification kits as a matter of record for law enforcement in case a child goes missing.

The first distribution is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. Feb. 5 at WesBanco at 2400 Town Center Boulevard.

“This is the first-ever program we’re doing of this kind. We’re working with the Canonsburg Ministerial Association and the Canonsburg Armory – a youth faith organization – to provide future dates. But for this first round, we hope to have 1,000 kits distributed,” said Rotary spokeswoman Stephanie Urchick.

In the kits are wallet-sized sleeves with an inkless fingerprint card and an ID card to detail the physical description of a child. “These are sealed away, saved at home. This is a personal record that doesn’t get turned in, so nothing can happen to it,” Urchick said.

Rotary members plan to continue promoting the National Child ID program, which is sponsored by the American Football Coaches Association. Rotary has worked on children’s initiatives, including an annual gift of a dictionary to every third-grader in the Canon-McMillan and Chartiers-Houston school districts, according to Urchick.

“Our hope is parents and guardians never have to bring out these cards, but they’re a valuable resource in the unfortunate circumstances that they would be needed,” Urchick said.
