Sidewalk reminder issued

Despite nature taking care of the latest snowfall with climbing temperatures and rain, Washington property owners are required to clear ice and snow-covered sidewalks within 12 hours of winter storms.
“The ordinance requires all snow and ice be removed 12 hours after a snowfall, but I will typically give 24 hours,” said code enforcement officer Ron McIntyre.
McIntyre received just two complaints this season about neglected sidewalks. When he gets a complaint, McIntyre notifies the property owner by mail. If they still don’t comply, he can file a citation.
“It could be $100 to $600 per day,” McIntyre said.
Because of an agreement reached between city officials and Arc Human Services earlier this month, McIntyre will have support this season from Arc clients, who are available to perform snow removal, among other duties.
“They’re helping us out. I notified them about the corner of Chestnut and North Main (streets) – that’s always a trouble spot,” he said.
McIntyre directed residents to call 724-223-4203 or email code.enforcement@washingtonpa.us with snow-removal complaints.
