Fundraiser benefits Meals on Wheels program in Greene County

You don’t have to drive a Subaru to “Share the Love” with Greene County’s Meals on Wheels volunteers. You can buy a bag of peanuts. In December, Community Action Southwest, which sponsors the local Meals on Wheels program in Greene County, started its newest fundraiser through selling bags of Texas Roadhouse peanuts and a coupon for a free cactus blossom or fried pickle appetizer. The donation of $3 for the package will help Meals on Wheels buy gas cards for the volunteers who bring five meals each week to seniors.

In Greene County, Meals on Wheels volunteers delivered 41,507 meals last year, Carmichaels Senior Center Supervisor Bridget Dennison said.

“If it weren’t for our volunteers, there would be no program,” she said.

Meals are prepared at the center in Carmichaels, then delivered by volunteers to seniors who come to the centers to eat lunch in Bobtown, Mt. Morris, Jefferson, Waynesburg and West Greene. Volunteer drivers then go into the community and take both hot lunches and frozen meals to those who sign up through the Area Agency on Aging for the service.

“We have one volunteer who brings his Labrador Bella with him and we have a home-schooler mom who brings her children with her. She drives and they deliver,” Dennison said. “We always need drivers. Give Community Action a call if you want to help out.”

Even those seniors not on the regular routes for delivery can call Area Agency on Aging on its toll-free number and make arrangements to have frozen meals delivered on a regular basis, Dennison said.

Subaru started its “Share the Love Event” in 2008 and partners with Meals on Wheels America and participating retailers like Texas Roadhouse, to help local programs go the extra mile to serve up nutritious lunches and frozen meals for the weekend to homebound seniors age 60 and older.

At the moment, the Texas Roadhouse peanuts are available in Waynesburg at the Area Agency on Aging office, Clark Chiropractic Center, Slingin’ Ink and the chamber of commerce office. They’re also available at the Chinese restaurant in Carmichaels and at each county senior center, Dennison said.

“If any other business would like to offer them, let me know,” she said. “We’ll be selling until I run out of peanuts.”
