A 43-year-old attorney from Rostraver Township announced his bid for state representative in the 58th Legislative District, which will be vacant as state Rep. Ted Harhai announced his retirement after nine terms. Justin Walsh said his plan to seek the Republican nomination in the yet-uncontested race was not a knee-jerk reaction to Harhai’s announcement.

“I decided to run six months ago. I put out a press release on Jan. 17 that I would be running. I started the petition process yesterday and I’m ready to go,” Walsh said.

Born and raised in Donora, Walsh graduated summa cum laude from St. Francis College with a political science degree in 1994 and received his law degree from Seton Hall University in 1997 and has been in general practice for 18 years.

“I’ve never run for office before, and I think that’s an advantage because this is not a lifetime appointment. I want to bring some fresh perspective to Harrisburg and bring some change here in the valley; more progress than we’ve seen in recent times. We need a renewed energy to take on the drug epidemic ravaging communities through Pennsylvania,” Walsh said.

Walsh, who has been married for 16 years, has three children, and said he wants to improve the Mon Valley as a place where families and businesses can thrive.

“I just want to see increased opportunity for people here, and our children. I want to help businesses we have grow and to attract new business. Blight is such a big issue for me. Politicians have given up on the process and we need new voices to fight for what is important,” he said.
