Washington revives Saturday detention

Washington School District has revived a disciplinary tool that Superintendent Roberta DiLorenzo hopes will discourage bad behavior.
The school board Monday night unanimously voted to bring back the junior/senior high school Saturday detention program to run from Saturday through June 3 at the school on Allison Avenue. The sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.
DiLorenzo said the session joins other disciplinary programs, including in-school and out-of-school suspensions. The Saturday session is intended for students who commit minor infractions, she said.
“It’s another tier of discipline added,” DiLorenzo said. “It doesn’t mean we have more (disciplinary) problems.”
Principals will have another option.”
DiLorenzo said the program that had been “pretty efficient” was brought back with new principals in place.
The board approved paying $25 an hour for a teacher to monitor the sessions that the superintendent said will be structured with students doing homework.
