A suspect wanted in connection with regional thefts and robberies in North Charleroi escaped from constables Friday as he was about to be arraigned at the office of District Judge Curtis Thompson, Charleroi police said.

A warrant for the arrest of John Crea and Christopher Carroll was served at Fairway Inn in Rostraver about 10 a.m. Crea was arraigned before Thompson on charges of burglary and theft, but Carroll slipped away from state constables as they were switching handcuffs, Charleroi police said.

Carroll then began texting his alleged girlfriend, Kaisie Hunsberger, Bentleyville police said. One text said, “I’ve got the cuffs off. Meet me somewhere.”

Monessen police reported Carroll stole a Cadillac Escalade, but abandoned it near the Walmart in Belle Vernon along with an unidentified female who overdosed on heroin, police said.

Police found Hunsberger and she was arraigned on a criminal conspiracy charge and placed in the Washington County jail on $5,000 bond. Carroll was not in custody as of Saturday evening.
