Red Cross will conduct home fire visit in Canonsburg this weekend
As part of a national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign designed to reduce deaths, injuries and property damage from home fires, the American Red Cross of Southwestern Pennsylvania, in partnership with Canonsburg Borough and its fire department, will conduct a door-to-door home fire campaign from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Teams of volunteers will visit homes where owners scheduled a visit. The teams will check any existing smoke alarms and replace those that are older than 10 years, replace batteries if needed in newer smoke alarms, and install new smoke alarms if needed, all at no charge. After the scheduled visits are completed, teams will canvass area homes to offer free smoke alarms to other residents.
While in the home, volunteers will offer to help the homeowner develop an escape plan in the event of a fire. The Red Cross recommends two escape routes from each room and a designated place outside the home where family members can meet after escaping a fire.
Homeowners should check smoke alarms every month and practice their escape drill with every family member monthly.
