Firefighters from Washington, Canton Township and North Strabane Township were called to fight a blaze Tuesday at a house at 340 Canton Ave. in Washington.

The state police fire marshal is being asked to investigate the cause of a fire just after noon Tuesday that extensively damaged a house at 340 Canton Ave. in Washington.

Washington fire Capt. George McMullen said the fire in the rental home started on the first floor. When firefighters arrived heavy smoke was showing from the two-story frame house, followed moments later by intense flames. McMullen said that no injuries were reported. Washington police said no one was home when the fire started.

“We were able to rotate the guys in and out to make sure no one got too tired,” McMullen said.

Assisting at the scene were firefighters from Canton Township as well as the rapid intervention teams from the North Strabane Township and Peters Township fire departments. McMullen said firefighters from North Franklin and South Strabane townships were on standby at the city’s station, responding to several false alarm calls.

The names of the owner and renter were not immediately available.
