Police buy meal for couple who didn’t want to sit near them

HOMESTEAD (AP) – A group of police officers picked up the check for a couple who didn’t want to sit near them at a Pennsylvania restaurant.

A server at the Eat’n Park restaurant in the borough of Homestead tells Pittsburgh’s WTAE-TV the couple wanted another table after being brought to a table near the officers Saturday. Officer Chuck Thomas says he told the man and woman that it was OK to sit near his group and that “we won’t hurt you.” After the couple walked away, he says he and another officer thought they should pay their bill.

The officers wrote on the bill, “thank you for your support.”

Thomas said the gesture was part of an effort to create “a better relationship between the community and police.”
