West Chestnut Street in Washington opened to traffic about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after a vehicle crashed into a utility pole Tuesday night outside New Tower restaurant at McCarrell Avenue.

Gene Mercer, acting captain with Washington Fire Department, said a man in his 60s apparently blacked out at the wheel and crashed into the pole about 9 p.m. Three transformers were knocked out and caught fire as a result of the crash.

Power was interrupted but restored fairly quickly for most in the area.

Washington police Chief Robert Wilson said West Penn Power crews completed restoration work earlier, but crews from Pennsylvania American Water Co. kept the road closed for work not related to the crash.

The driver was taken to Washington Hospital for observation.

Police said a report on the crash was not complete and further information was not available.
