WAYNESBURG – Now is the puuuurrrr-fect time for Greene County residents who are thinking about adopting kittens.

Jane Gapen, director of the Greene County Humane Society, said they are waiving the $35 kitten adoption fee because they have 89 kittens and it’s too many for them to care for.

“We can’t bring in kitties that need us if we don’t have space for them,” she said. “Overcrowding is not good for the health of the cats.”

Gapen, who’s been the director for more than 20 years, said summertime usually brings an increase in kittens because of the way cats reproduce from May through October. Right now, they have 58 more kittens than they did this time last year.

They have 70 kittens at the shelter at 183 Jefferson Road in Franklin Township, with the rest of them being fostered or cared for at the PETCO store in South Strabane Township. Anyone interested in adopting a kitten won’t have to pay the adoption fee, but will need a spay-neuter deposit, which is required by state law. Also, Gapen said any kittens under seven weeks old are required by state law to remain with their mothers. So, if someone is interested in a kitten, but not the entire litter, the kittens need to be old enough.

Cat coordinator for the society, Deidre Herrington of Franklin Township, said the humane society will be holding an Adopt-A-Thon for the kittens from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at PETCO, at 70 Trinity Point Drive in South Strabane Township.
